John Harris
John Harris received a BA from Connecticut State University in 1983 and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987. He was a member of the United States Canoe and Kayak team in 1983, 1985, 1987, and 1989.The subjects he studies are lakes, rivers and oceans. Harris has an extraordinary eye for unique water formations and captures a harmonious rhythm in all of his paintings.
He claims that there is an infinite amount of imagery displayed by nature. This is especially true with water. Being a canoeist for many years, he has become familiar with this subject. There is also a sense of calm and peace inherent in water, characteristics, he says, that he wants to capture in his work. His paintings are photorealistic and at the same time abstract. Up close the brush stroke becomes evident but as you step back the imagery comes together as a whole.
Most of Harris’s paintings are painted on canvas. He states, “Being an artist, and one who enjoys the attempt at realism, I find it a challenge to capture this display of imagery in oil.”
